The allotment garden evaluation should fulfil the purpose of purposefully promoting the allotment garden sector. The allotment gardeners should be encouraged to cultivate their allotment gardens in a proper allotment gardening manner. In this way the overall picture of the allotment gardens and the sites can offer pleasure and recreation for all sections of the population.
The following aspects should be given special consideration in the garden evaluation.
A well-designed garden is clearly arranged. The path blends well into the overall picture of the garden. Edge stones are no longer necessary. Paths do not have to be dead straight either. Slabs are laid neatly at ground level, they look impressive when, for example, low perennials are added as edge planting.
The arbour should be the jewel in the crown of every plot and should not be larger than 24 square metres. A free seat between the arbour and the garden leaves the design space free. There should be no further extensions. Greenhouse: Size 2 x 3 metres.
Mixed cultivation, intercropping etc. as well as soil care should be taken into account when cultivating vegetables.
Large trees do not belong in an allotment garden. Forest and park trees have no place in an allotment garden plot either. The right tree shape is the bush or spindle bush on low to medium-growing rootstocks.
A compost is essential for the garden. Special attention should be paid to composting. With correct composting, the compost can be used quickly. For this reason, a compost may be sufficient in some circumstances.
For strawberries, an annual crop is appropriate. With good arrangement, flowers, perennials and woody plants enhance the overall impression.
Bird protection is an essential measure.
Plant protection is not only pest control. Sensible care measures increase the natural resistance of the cultures, e.g. healthy soil, humus supply, soil cover and correct plant spacing.
Cleanliness is the top priority in an allotment garden.
The evaluation of allotment gardens is not a measurable matter. It is determined by each individual evaluator to the best of their knowledge and belief.
